Welcome to our newest 2022-23 production, Detroit: A City of Hot Rods and Muscle Cars. We have officially started the engine of what we are sure will be an exciting trip down memory lane as we gain access to some of the nation’s top muscle car and hot rod builders and aficionados, hailing from where it all started, the Motor City.
Muscle cars didn’t just change Detroit automotive culture; they reimagined it. The ability to control raw power on an open road without checkered flags or pace cars, with distant frontiers beckoning, came to symbolize the unbridled freedom of the American spirit. Now that those frontiers are all but subdued and the future appears to be the domain of cleaner and tamer electric vehicles, it is worth looking in our rearview mirror to an era where big-block engines roared and guzzled leaded gasoline, where chrome glittered, and a car’s worth was determined by the number of horses that powered it.
To kick off the production, we had the opportunity to sit down with 91-year-old founder of Autorama, Bob Larivee, to take a walk down memory lane. Thanks to the gracious hospitality of Ken Lingenfelter, our sit-down talk with Bob took place in Ken’s garage-like museum of some of the most impressive custom-built cars that left rubber on the open roads.
We will also take a deep look into the significant music and DJ’s during the hot rod and muscle car movement, as well as where the current and future trends will be taking this so dearly loved world of hot rods and muscle cars.
