It was a perfect day on Saturday as over 130 Hot Rods and Muscle Cars roared into the Novi Rose Senior Living at Providence Park thanks to the Michigan Hot Rod Association of Michigan. The specially planned showing was to give the 140 senior residents from both the senior living residential area as well as the memory care unit a chance to step back in time through the sounds of the purring engines, bright color paint, and chrome wheels of their youth. The director of the MHRA, Butch Patrico, explained that most of the MHRA members are retired and they recognize the significance of what these community gatherings do for their elders.
We had a chance to talk with many of the residents who were former employees at the big three car companies; Don Moore, a retired Ford design engineer and John Pierce, a retired GM design engineer. As well as others who reflected on their time working for Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Chrysler and shared memories of their first cars from their youth.
With music from DJ Paul Peters filling the air, we were able to film many of the cars with their owners, but the highlight of the day was when Al Bergler climbed into one of his award-winning dragsters and fired it up for the crowd.
A very big thank you to Patrico and the members of the MHRA for taking the time to put some smiles on the seniors' faces for the day. This filming will be a special story segment in our film to gain a deeper understanding from the residents just how car shows can transcend them back to their youth even if it's for a short bit.
