Hot Wheels have been a favorite pastime for the majority of the people we’ve talked to throughout this production. Not only are Hot Wheels a favorite of car enthusiasts, they’re also loved by any kid that gets their hands on one. But could you imagine owning over 7,000 of them? Sheri Abbey, the owner of Sheri's Wheels, started customizing Hot Wheels in the late 90s, purchasing a collection of 7,000 to make her own.
As a machinist, Abbey has worked on cars all her life through the inspiration of her father who owned a body shop and raced cars in his spare time. She began collecting a little after her son was born and became a pro at designing and customizing them. This venture got her invited to a Hot Wheels customization event in Japan with Mattel’s support and was inducted into the Diecast Hall of Fame in 2009.
Customizing cars can take a lot of time and money but not when it fits in the palm of your hand.
“I can build anything that I can dream of with just a few dollars.” She says.
Abbey has since returned to customizing life-size cars, putting her Hot Wheels hobby aside.
We’re happy to share this story in the film.
